I almost forgot to blog today!! It’s Sunday, which means I am quit the busy beaver, and the little computer time I do have I tend to spend visiting a few online communities for a little bit. Today I have no free time, and yet, while I was making a quick lunch I was reminded that I needed to blog today. It’s not NaBloPoMo if I don’t do it every single day!
So today I thought I would share a super simple homemade solution, and that is for pizza sauce. We are huge fans of pizza in our house- whether it be purchased or made from scratch, we love pizza in every way. Homemade pizza became a staple once we found a pizza dough that we all liked. But one area that has taken me much longer to perfect is the area of pizza sauce. I’ve tried every tomato product under the sun to find the sauce that we would deem pizza perfection. For the most part though, I’m embarrassed to admit that we usually just buy pre-made pizza sauce.
More recently though, when we’ve had pizza night, we’ve followed it up a few nights later with a calzone night. Calzones work spectacularly for taking along to munch on during dance classes, but I’ve found the best calzones are made sans sauce, and then you put the sauce on the side for dunking. Delicious, but a small jar of pizza sauce does not go very far in providing enough sauce for four hearty appetites.
Thankfully, I found the answer to easy homemade pizza sauce. It really is this easy. Open two cans, whisk together, and then add some seasonings. Add more seasonings if you want. Subtract seasonings if you want. Add something else if your heart desires. I really like adding crushed red pepper flakes, but that only works when I make pizza for the adults. Of course, using tomato products that you love helps, but this simple recipe makes an ample amount of sauce. It easily makes enough pizza sauce for five of our family sized pizzas. Divide leftover sauce into freezable containers, and then you have homemade pizza sauce in the freezer and at the ready for when the homemade pizza craving strikes.
Do I really need to mention how cost effective making your own pizza sauce is? Pizza is already an affordable meal when made at home, by making my own sauce, I’ve really beefed up the savings. Now if I could just figure out how to hide a milk cow in our backyard to make cheese with, we’d be set.
