It never rains, but it pours.
Yesterday as I was literally floating on air from our raspberry success, a phone call came in. The phone call telling me that my blueberry order was in and ready for pick-up. All 50 pounds of them. Seriously, all I could do was laugh, because in just a few days our family is packing up and heading to the woods for our annual camping getaway. And once again, I have negative time to handle my precious blueberry harvest. Fortunately, they freeze better than anything else- simply pop them in a freezer bag and place in the freezer. They freeze individually all on their own for easy measuring later on. Last year I ended up using berries I’d frozen in a few batches of jam, and it worked just as well as using them fresh.
But before we leave, my mission is to use them in as many ways as I can before I absolutely have to put the rest in the freezer. After all, I still have eight quarts left from last year, and I only ordered 40 pounds… and then went picking and picked 15 more pounds.
Anyway, tonight we started out wanting bluberry pancakes. Only Andy came home early today, which is a very rare treat, we seldom see him before 9- if we see him at all. Did he want to grill? You bet, so chicken parts were gathered and spread about the charcoal grill for a long, slow cooking, and I needed to come up with dessert. My original idea had been shortcakes, but I wasn’t relishing the idea of turning on the oven. Don’t tell anyone, but I actually went and bought pre-made pound cake from Sam’s Club. I also bought Organic Valley whipping cream, and then returned home to assemble the perfect dessert to end the perfect day.
Which brings me to a new-to-me product I wanted to tell you about. See that white-ish drizzle on the fruit that looks like white caramel? That is Ghirardelli’s White Chocolate Flavored Sauce. I first had that a few weeks ago at an Orange Leaf frozen yogurt bar. (More on that place, another day, because I am addicted!) At the end of the frozen yogurt line are three bottles of Ghirardelli goodness- chocolate, caramel, and white chocolate. I had to try the white chocolate, and I was instantly hooked. Buttery and creamy, it is made from sweetened condensed milk, which totally explains my affinity for it. It’s a little pricey, but it’s quite tasty, and the kids have been thrilled to have a bottle around for adding to ice cream.
