Yesterday my little man turned seven years old.  Seven! This is his sixth birthday that I blogged, and I just had to wait until I had a cake to take a picture of.  He drew the short stick this year with the date his birthday fell on, as it was a Thursday- our busiest night of the week.  We made our best effort as far as celebrating the day, but the celebratory cake would have to wait for today, when we get together with friends for a game night.

Once upon a time, when I started making cakes for my kids, they were surprises.  But somewhere along the line, their cakes turned into requests… and got way harder.  The last year’s Star Wars cakes just about did me in, so this year I told Zander that he could pick the flavor of cake, but I got to choose the decorating possibilities.

I think it turned out beautifully.

Zander’s favorite food is pizza, so I decided to make him a pizza cake.  The cake layers are scratch cakes of yellow and devil’s food- both King Arthur Flour recipes, and the frosting is a simple basic vanilla buttercream.   For the pizza sauce I used a small can of raspberry pastry and pie filling.  Had this cake been for Abigail, I would have chosen shredded coconut as my cheese, but Zander doesn’t like coconut, so his cheese is Ghirardelli white chocolate that I grated on my box grater.  For pizza toppings, I used chocolate covered peanuts (sausage), juju coins (pepperoni) and green apple sour straws as my green pepper.

He is very happy with his cake, and we’re looking forward to sharing it with friends later on today.  Happy Birthday Zander!
